What Is an Independent Life Insurance Broker?

An independent broker isn't tied to any single insurance company. We represent you, not a carrier. That means we shop dozens of carriers to find the best price and coverage for your specific situation.

Compare that to a captive agent who works for just one big-name carrier — they can only sell you their company's products. A broker has access to the full market.

Beyond price, brokers are experts on underwriting — the process carriers use to decide what you'll pay. The same person can be rated Preferred at one carrier, Standard at another, and Tobacco at a third. That difference can be hundreds of dollars a year.

When a Broker Makes the Biggest Difference

Not every situation needs a broker equally. Here's when we add the most value:

Bigger Policies ($500K+)

Price differences between carriers get significant at higher coverage amounts.

Age 40+

Rates diverge more as you get older. Carrier selection matters more.

Health Issues

Each carrier treats diabetes, heart conditions, and cancer history differently. We know who's lenient on what.

Unusual Risks

Pilots, scuba divers, rock climbers. Some carriers won't touch you. Others don't care.

When it matters less: If you're young, healthy, and buying a small policy (under $20/month), an independent broker probably won't move the needle much. The carriers are all going to give you roughly the same great rate. We'll still help you, but we'll be honest that the advantage is smaller.

Does It Cost More to Use a Broker?

No. Life insurance prices are regulated by law. If you buy a policy from us, from a captive agent, or from your cousin down the street — all working with the same carrier — the price is the same.

Brokers get paid by the insurance carriers, not by you. That cost is built into every policy regardless of how you buy it, so you're not paying extra for the help.

What most people don't realize: Many carriers and products are only available through brokers. They don't sell directly to consumers because it's dramatically cheaper for them to work through agents. If you go out on your own, you're not seeing the full market.

A Broker Isn't Right for Everyone

We'd rather be upfront now than waste your time. Here's who we're not a good fit for.

We might recommend more coverage than you'd buy on your own.

As brokers, we have a professional duty to advise you on how much insurance you actually need to protect your family. Sometimes that number is higher than what you walked in thinking. You can always say no and buy less — any life insurance is a million times better than no life insurance.

You have to talk to a human.

If you really want to do everything self-serve at midnight on your laptop, there are options for that — but we're not one of them. Working with a broker means a phone call or a Zoom. Nobody's coming to your house (that's the old way), but we do need to have a conversation to do our job well.

Life Insurance Is Genuinely Confusing

Whole life vs. term. 10-year vs. 30-year. Preferred vs. Standard. Everything you read seems to contradict something else. There are thousands of products from dozens of carriers, and the jargon makes it worse.

A broker cuts through all of that. We figure out what you actually need, find you the best price for it, and walk you through the whole thing so you get the right product the first time — no second-guessing.

What Happens After You Reach Out

Our process is simple. Two conversations, then we handle the rest.

1

Needs Assessment

We figure out how much coverage you actually need. We have tools and a spreadsheet to make it quick. If you already know exactly what you want, we can skip this.

2

Risk Assessment

A quick medical questionnaire, income, lifestyle questions. This tells us what you'll qualify for and at what price class — so we know where to place you.

3

Carrier Selection & Application

Based on your needs and risk profile, we pick the best carrier and submit the application. Every carrier is a little different — we handle all of it.

4

Decision & Right-Sizing

The carrier makes their decision. If anything needs adjusting — coverage amount, term length, whatever — we fine-tune it until you're happy.

You're Covered

You enter your payment info directly in the carrier's portal, set up billing, and you're done. You'll have a life insurance policy that protects your family.
